Live Coding Workshop at the International American Institute
Lucas Piorno Palomo

Hi everyone! Last Monday 14 we went to the International American Institute, where the Live Coding Visual Workshop took place.
Once inside we met Olivia Jack, professional coder, artist and creator of Hydra, a set of tools designed to create futuristic but at the same time kind of vintage-looking visuals. She explained how this is best used among other resources such as music, images or even real live dancers. Very easy to pick up and with striking results, programming on Hydra is surprisingly addictive. After learning the basics, we all were able to experiment with different animations and graphics. With each new concept we learnt, new possibilities opened before us. From the funny faces that we pulled when we discovered how to use the laptop's camera, to the numerous whistles that could be heard in the room once we understood how to mix the sound with the visuals, the workshop boosted creativity.
In brief, the activity was very enjoyable and enriching. Taught in a building full of history that talks about cooperation between cultures and equality between genders. It was an opportunity to discover new ways to express originality and a quite fun hobby.

Approaching the end of the activity, Olivia asked us a question: Why should you go to watch a programmer livecode in front of you? Does it make any sense? We would love to hear your anwsers in the comments.
